The Anniversary
The Anniversary has a really interesting format. The story moves forward one year at a time, always on the same date, starting with the May 1st incident that changes everything for Quinn and Jules when they are just 17. From there, each chapter jumps to May 1st of the following years as they try to rebuild their lives and grow into adulthood.
Because of this structure, the story moves quickly. You are constantly stepping into a new point in their lives, realizing relationships have ended, careers have shifted, and people have changed. It keeps things engaging and easy to move through.
There is a trigger warning for sexual assault, though it is not described in graphic detail, which may be appreciated by some readers.
Watching Quinn and Jules navigate life after everything they went through adds emotional weight, especially during the moments when their paths cross again over the years.
I had a few guesses about who might be responsible, but I definitely did not see all of the twists coming, and that is always a win for me. Alex Finlay delivers another layered story, and I will definitely be picking up whatever comes next.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
